House Republicans are investigating President Joe Biden’s doctor following his debate performance. House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) sent a letter to White House physician Kevin O’Connor, requesting a transcribed interview by July 14.
“Americans question President Biden’s ability to lead the country,” Comer wrote, referencing O’Connor’s February assessment that Biden is a “healthy, active, robust 81-year-old-male.” O’Connor had reported no neurological issues but noted Biden’s stiffer gait.
Comer’s investigation follows Biden’s debate performance, which raised concerns among Democrats and prompted some to call for him to step down. Biden has insisted he will remain in the race.
The GOP’s campaign arms are pressuring House and Senate Democrats about Biden’s fitness for office. Comer’s letter signals House Republicans’ intent to use their majority to investigate, with some pushing for hearings or subpoenas of White House officials, including O’Connor.
Comer linked this investigation to a separate impeachment inquiry focused on Biden’s family deals. He also requested documents related to Jim Biden, questioning O’Connor’s ability to provide independent reviews of the President’s fitness to serve. Jim Biden had sought O’Connor’s help in 2017, when Joe Biden was out of office.
