The GOP-led House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday approved a measure to rename the opera house at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House,” according to the Washington Examiner. The proposal was adopted in a 33–25 vote as part of the Interior Department’s fiscal year 2026 spending bill markup.

Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID), chair of the Interior subcommittee, introduced the amendment, calling it a fitting tribute to Melania Trump for her service as the Kennedy Center’s honorary chairwoman—a role traditionally held by first ladies.

Democrats criticized the move as political, with Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) calling it “slightly divisive” and questioning the timing and motivations. Republicans defended the change, saying it celebrates the former first lady’s contributions to the arts.

The vote follows President Trump‘s February reshaping of the Kennedy Center’s leadership. After dismissing Biden-era appointees, Trump installed new board members who named him chairman as part of a broader cultural agenda aimed at countering perceived liberal influence in the arts.

The amendment must still pass both chambers of Congress to become law.

Linda

Absolutely NOT. She has done NOTHING to earn such an honor. She’s a Larry Flynt ‘model’ at best.
