Border czar Tom Homan defended the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement Sunday, stating that parents of U.S.-born children are not “immune” from deportation.
“Having a U.S. citizen child doesn’t make you immune from our laws,” Homan said on CBS News’s Face the Nation. “American families get separated every day by law enforcement.”
His remarks follow a recent federal court case where a 2-year-old U.S. citizen was deported alongside her mother and sister, prompting alarm from a judge who scheduled a hearing for May 16 in Louisiana.
Homan argued that parents, not the government, are responsible for deciding whether to leave children behind during deportations. He called it “parenting 101,” saying the mother chose to take her child with her.
Host Margaret Brennan noted that the father had attempted to arrange custody but was limited to a brief phone call. Homan pushed back, asserting, “That’s a parent’s decision. It’s not a government decision.”
He emphasized that giving birth to a U.S. citizen child does not serve as a “get out of jail free card” for immigration violations.
