The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday that it is terminating $60 million in federal grants to Harvard University over what it called “continued failure to address antisemitic harassment and race discrimination” on campus. The move is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to reshape academia using federal research funding as leverage.
The administration has frozen or canceled nearly $3 billion in grants and contracts to Harvard in recent weeks, targeting the school’s handling of pro-Palestinian protests and admissions practices the administration claims still consider ethnicity. In a post on X, HHS cited ongoing discrimination and inadequate protections for Jewish students.
Harvard is suing the federal government over the cuts, arguing the moves are retaliatory. The university recently settled a lawsuit filed by an Orthodox Jewish student and pledged new protections amid mounting legal pressure.
Other elite institutions, including Columbia University, are also under scrutiny.
