War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced he will recommend that Donald Trump approve the execution of former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who killed 14 people and injured dozens in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. Hasan was convicted by a military jury and sentenced to death, but has remained on death row at Fort Leavenworth for over a decade.

“I am 100% committed to ensuring the death penalty is carried out for Nidal Hasan,” Hegseth said, calling Hasan a “savage terrorist” whose victims “deserve justice without delays.”

Hasan lost his final appeal earlier this year. He admitted he carried out the attack because he viewed U.S. soldiers as fighting against the “Islamic Empire.”

Under military regulations, the execution order must be reviewed by Army officials, passed to the War Secretary, and then forwarded to the president for approval. If Trump authorizes the execution, Hasan would become the first soldier executed after a court-martial since 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was hanged for rape and attempted murder.
