Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the firing of three top military lawyers, stating they were “roadblocks” to President Donald Trump’s orders. The judge advocates general (JAGs) provide legal guidance on military operations, but Hegseth said the administration wanted new leadership to ensure “the best possible recommendations” on lawful orders.
The firings, which affected legal heads in the Army, Air Force, and Navy, were part of a broader Pentagon shake-up, including the removal of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. CQ Brown Jr. Critics, including Georgetown Law professor Rosa Brooks, suggested the dismissals were meant to eliminate legal opposition to potential unlawful actions.
Hegseth dismissed these concerns as “hyperbole,” stating the move was necessary to bring in “fresh blood” at the Pentagon. The firings have sparked backlash from legal and military experts.
