Vice President Harris backed President Biden’s push for Supreme Court term limits and a constitutional amendment to counteract the recent presidential immunity decision.
“President Biden and I strongly believe that the American people must have confidence in the Supreme Court,” Harris stated. She cited a “crisis of confidence” due to numerous ethics scandals and controversial decisions.
Biden’s proposal includes 18-year term limits for justices, allowing new appointments every two years, and a binding code of conduct for the Court. It also calls for a constitutional amendment clarifying that former presidents do not have immunity from federal criminal indictments.
The proposals face significant obstacles, with Republican opposition in Congress and the need for two-thirds majorities in the House and Senate, plus ratification by three-fourths of the states.
Harris argued that the reforms will “restore confidence in the Court, strengthen our democracy, and ensure no one is above the law.” She and Biden are urging Congress to pass the reforms.
