Former Vice President Kamala Harris alleged in a forthcoming memoir that staffers for former President Joe Biden “added fuel” to negative stories about her during their time in office. The excerpt, published Wednesday in The Atlantic, describes tensions within the White House as Harris faced scrutiny over staff turnover and her work on migration.
“Worse, I often learned that the president’s staff was adding fuel to negative narratives that sprang up around me,” Harris wrote. She said Biden’s aides embraced a “zero-sum” view, believing her success diminished him. “My visible success as his vice president was vital … it would serve as a testament to his judgment in choosing me and reassurance that if something happened, the country was in good hands.”
Harris argued her success was important for Biden, but his team “didn’t get it.” She added it was “recklessness” to leave the decision on a reelection bid entirely up to Biden.
The memoir, 107 Days, recounts her 2024 presidential campaign after Biden announced he would not seek another term. Harris said in July she would not run for California governor in 2026, leaving her political future uncertain.
