Vice President Kamala Harris defended her reluctance to publicly criticize President Biden, citing a “tradition” among vice presidents to avoid challenging their presidents. Speaking during a campaign stop in Michigan, Harris told NBC’s Peter Alexander that vice presidents, including former VP Mike Pence, have historically avoided being critical of their presidents, as it doesn’t foster a productive relationship.
Harris emphasized her own experiences and policies as shaping her approach to governance, highlighting proposals such as expanded Medicare, aid for first-time homebuyers, and support for small businesses. She has walked a fine line between loyalty to Biden and demonstrating her readiness to govern independently.
President Biden also acknowledged that Harris would lead the country differently if elected, underscoring her “fresh and new” perspective in contrast to Donald Trump’s “old and failed” approach. Harris echoed these sentiments in a Fox News interview, where she stated her presidency would not simply extend Biden’s, stressing her intention to seek bipartisan input.
Despite Harris’s efforts to distinguish herself, Trump has used her comments from recent media appearances to argue that she should be held responsible for issues like the Afghanistan withdrawal and immigration challenges.
