In an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized that decisions on gender-affirming care should be left to doctors and patients. When pressed by NBC’s Hallie Jackson about her stance on access to such care, Harris stated, “we should follow the law,” referring to federal guidelines allowing doctors to determine what is medically necessary.

Harris also responded to Trump campaign ads claiming she supports taxpayer-funded gender-affirmation surgeries, saying the ads aim to distract voters from Republican efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “Donald Trump is running tens of millions of dollars in ads to distract from the fact that his policy… is also to take away the Affordable Care Act,” she said.

Addressing LGBTQ concerns, Harris reiterated her support for treating all people with “dignity and respect,” a position she said has remained consistent throughout her career. Last week, Harris told Fox News’s Bret Baier that the Trump administration also provided gender-affirming care in the federal prison system, calling Trump’s ad a case of “throwing stones when you’re living in a glass house.”
