Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign criticized former President Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of Florida’s Amendment 3, which would legalize recreational marijuana. In a Truth Social post, Trump expressed support for the measure, advocating for ending arrests for small amounts of marijuana and implementing regulations for safe products.
Joseph Costello, a spokesperson for Harris’s campaign, accused Trump of “blatant pandering” and noted that Trump’s record on marijuana reform includes opposition to state legalization laws and safe banking legislation. “Donald Trump does not actually believe in marijuana reform,” Costello said, pointing to Trump’s administration policies that targeted nonviolent marijuana offenses.
Trump reiterated his support for marijuana reform and promised to work on rescheduling marijuana to a lower classification if re-elected. However, the Biden administration has already started the process of rescheduling marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug, though President Biden has yet to fulfill his 2020 campaign promise to fully decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.
