Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley criticized GOP attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris over her race and gender as “not helpful.” In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Haley addressed comments from Republican lawmakers who labeled Harris a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) hire.

“It’s not helpful,” Haley stated. “We’re talking about a liberal senator who hasn’t accomplished much. You don’t need to talk about what she looks like or her gender. The American people are smarter than that.”

Harris, of Jamaican and Indian descent, would be the first woman and first woman of color to serve as president if elected. Republicans like Rep. Tim Burchett and Rep. Harriet Hageman have called Harris a DEI hire, with Burchett later expressing regret.

Haley, who has faced similar criticism, urged focusing on Harris’s policies, such as her positions on fracking, taxes, and the Israel-Hamas conflict. “It doesn’t matter what she looks like. It matters what she’s said and the lack of results,” Haley concluded.
