Washington, D.C. — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Thursday that she will introduce legislation to “aggressively” phase out the H-1B visa program and ultimately eliminate it, marking another break between the Georgia Republican and President Donald Trump. Greene said the bill would end the visa program except for a limited exemption for medical professionals, allowing up to 10,000 visas annually for doctors and nurses, with even that number potentially being phased out over a decade.

In a video posted on X, Greene said her proposal would end the current path to citizenship for visa holders and require them to return to their home countries once their visas expire. She argued that the H-1B program was meant for temporary specialty positions, saying it has been “riddled with fraud and abuse” and contributed to the displacement of U.S. workers.

The announcement comes days after Trump defended bringing foreign workers to the United States, prompting pushback from some of his political allies. Trump has previously supported reforms of the visa program rather than its elimination and recently signed a proclamation creating a one-time $100,000 fee that alarmed many in the tech industry.

Greene has increasingly criticized the Trump administration over health-care costs and the release of records tied to Jeffrey Epstein. Responding to her recent remarks, Trump said Greene had “lost her way,” while Greene insisted she remains “100% America first and only.”

Greene said the goal of the new bill is to “put American citizens first” and limit the long-term use of foreign labor.
