Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said Saturday she plans to introduce a bill criminalizing weather modification and geoengineering, such as cloud seeding. The proposed legislation would ban “the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals” into the atmosphere to alter weather, climate, or sunlight, making such acts felonies.

“This is about protecting the environment and people from dangerous practices,” Greene wrote on X. She said her bill mirrors a recently passed Florida law imposing a $100,000 fine and five-year prison sentence for unauthorized geoengineering.

Critics argue the bill fuels conspiracy theories linking contrails to “chemtrails.” Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) mocked the proposal as an attack on science. Greene has previously claimed Democrats can “control the weather,” prompting pushback from President Biden.

Despite skepticism, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) voiced support. Greene’s office hasn’t clarified federal penalties or enforcement details.

Cloud seeding has been used for decades to increase precipitation, though it’s rarely federally applied. Scientists warn confusing this with conspiracy theories may mislead the public about legitimate climate and weather research.
