VoteCast results from the midterm elections last month showed that 38% of independent voters nationwide supported Republican House candidates. That falls far short of the 51% the Democrats achieved with the same group in 2018 when they were swept into power after winning 41 seats.
The GOP’s poor performance among independents contributes to the explanation of why the party only managed to flip nine seats, securing a flimsy majority that has already sparked concerns about the party’s ability to govern.
