Just 21,559 voter registrations now separate Republicans from Democrats in North Carolina, according to the latest update from the State Board of Elections. As of May 31, the state had 7,522,857 registered voters: 37.8% unaffiliated, 30.7% Democrats, and 30.4% Republicans.

The rise of unaffiliated voters continues a two-decade shift, with independents reaching a record 37.9% in October 2023. In 2004, Democrats held a commanding lead, with 47.6% of voters, while Republicans stood at 34.4%. That lead was 864,253 on Election Day 2008, but has dwindled steadily.

North Carolina’s political landscape has transformed significantly. The state Supreme Court, once 6-1 Democrat in 2020, now has a 5-2 Republican majority. Analysts predict the GOP could surpass Democrats in registrations by year’s end.

Ongoing voter roll maintenance and anticipated party updates may accelerate the shift. Officials say the state auditor’s oversight of the Board of Elections may improve roll accuracy further.
