Republican senators are expressing frustration with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) over his inability to secure votes to prevent a government shutdown at the end of September. With no resolution in sight, Senate Republicans are preparing to collaborate with Democrats to avert the crisis if Johnson doesn’t act by Thursday.

Senate Republicans warn that a shutdown could be politically damaging, especially with the presidential election approaching. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) criticized the situation, stating, “This whole thing’s a debacle.”

Johnson faces resistance within his own party over a short-term funding bill, with conservatives opposing any temporary measures. Last week, he was forced to pull a vote on a bill that included a controversial voter registration provision, which Democrats rejected outright.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged the House to abandon divisive proposals and prioritize keeping the government open. Republican leaders, including Senate Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), hope the House can pass a stopgap measure this week to fund the government through December.

If the House fails to act, Senate Republicans signaled they are ready to move forward on their own.
