National security-minded Republican lawmakers are increasingly alarmed by former President Trump’s recent actions and their implications for key issues like the war in Ukraine, NATO, and Taiwan. Trump’s invitation to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Mar-a-Lago after the NATO summit has raised concerns due to Orbán’s ties to Putin. Trump’s selection of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), an opponent of the Ukraine aid package, as his running mate, further dismayed defense-focused GOP senators.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine, despite Trump’s reluctance. He warned that global authoritarian regimes pose a significant threat to the democratic world. Trump’s recent moves, including his meeting with Orbán and statements about Taiwan, have unsettled Senate Republicans, raising questions about his commitment to defending U.S. allies.
Sen. Ron Johnson and other Republicans opposing further aid to Ukraine welcomed Vance’s selection, viewing it as a shift in policy. However, some senators remain hopeful that Trump will be persuaded to maintain strong support for Ukraine and other key alliances.
