Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) suggested withholding federal disaster relief funds from California unless the state changes its environmental policies. In a Fox News appearance, Davidson criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom’s handling of wildfire preparedness, stating, “If they want the money, then there should be consequences where they have to change their policies.”
Davidson aligned with President-elect Trump, who has repeatedly blamed California’s forest management for worsening fires. Trump previously accused Newsom of failing to conduct controlled burns and other preventive measures, tweeting in 2019, “Get your act together, Governor.”
California has suffered four uncontrolled wildfires in recent days, with at least 13 fatalities reported. Gov. Newsom urged Trump to visit affected areas as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20. Meanwhile, President Biden continues coordinating federal aid and meeting with local fire officials.
