Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), leading a Republican counter-investigation into the Jan. 6 committee, accused former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) of witness tampering and urged a criminal investigation by the FBI. Loudermilk’s report alleges Cheney improperly influenced former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to alter testimony, citing inconsistencies between her initial statements and later ones after Cheney’s involvement.
Hutchinson testified that her Trump-aligned attorney, Stefan Passantino, discouraged her from being truthful, suggesting “the less you remember, the better.” Cheney denied the accusations, calling Loudermilk’s report defamatory.
The report’s claims echo prior Republican grievances, including allegations the Jan. 6 committee unfairly targeted Trump allies. It also parallels the committee’s own criminal referral against Passantino.
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) dismissed Loudermilk’s recommendation as unconstitutional, citing protections for legislative duties under the Constitution. The Justice Department’s response could test how far the GOP seeks retribution against Trump’s political opponents, though prominent Republicans have cast doubt on pursuing such actions.
