Polling shows Republicans are nearly split over the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to uphold an 1864 law banning most abortions. Data for Progress found 49% of Republicans disapprove of the decision, while 46% approve. This reflects the GOP’s struggle with abortion politics post-Roe v Wade.
Voters diverged on their belief in Donald Trump’s statements on the issue. Trump claimed the Arizona Supreme Court went too far and insisted the decision will be “straightened out”. He also stated that abortion is best decided by state governments.
In the poll, 80% of Democrats believed Trump was being “dishonest” and would sign national abortion restrictions. The same percentage of Republicans believed Trump was being “honest” and would not further restrict abortion.
Independent and third-party voters were more divided. Forty-one per cent believed Trump would restrict abortion access if elected president, while 30% thought he would maintain the current level of access.
Most voters believed the U.S. president has little influence over abortion rights, with the responsibility lying more with Congress, statewide officials, and state lawmakers.
Since the overturning of Roe in 2022, GOP-supported abortion bans have taken full effect, cutting off access for millions of women. However, most Americans believe abortion should be available in the first trimester of pregnancy. Following Roe’s demise, abortion-rights supporters have won multiple red-state ballot measures to protect abortion rights.
Some Republican officials and candidates have attempted to moderate their stance on abortion. Multiple Arizona Republicans denounced the Supreme Court decision, but efforts to repeal the 1864 abortion ban were blocked in the state legislature.
