A new report from GLAAD found that 52% of over 930 tracked anti-LGBTQ+ incidents from May 2024 to April 2025 targeted transgender and gender-nonconforming people. These included protests, verbal abuse, and violence, with 84 injuries and 10 deaths recorded. While total incidents declined from the previous year, attacks on transgender individuals rose 14%.

Sarah Moore, who leads the Anti-LGBTQ Extremism Reporting Tracker (ALERT), warned of growing hostility fueled by political rhetoric. Donald Trump has signed executive orders affecting gender identity recognition and access to health care. GLAAD also reported a 57% increase in anti-LGBTQ+ incidents involving local governments, coinciding with a surge in related bills.

Minnesota Rep. Leigh Finke, the first openly transgender state legislator, shared how her visibility brought both progress and personal danger. She cited the murder of Sam Nordquist, a Black transgender man, as a harrowing example of ongoing violence.

Finke stressed the need for cultural as well as legislative change: “We have to continue to make our stories known.”
