Ghislaine Maxwell has filed a motion urging a federal judge to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to unseal grand jury transcripts from her criminal case. Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, argued she was left with “no choice” after Judge Paul Engelmayer denied her request to review the materials herself.
“Jeffrey Epstein is dead. Ghislaine Maxwell is not,” Markus wrote, asserting that unsealing the transcripts would violate her due process rights and undermine the traditional secrecy of grand jury proceedings.
The Justice Department recently moved to release grand jury records from both Epstein’s and Maxwell’s cases amid increasing pressure from Trump supporters to disclose more information. A recent DOJ memo concluded Epstein had no client list and died by suicide — findings that have fueled speculation and skepticism.
Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year sentence, is appealing her conviction. Despite the government not opposing her access request, Engelmayer ruled that grand jury secrecy laws prevent disclosure to defendants.
Victims have also filed letters questioning the motives behind the push for unsealing. The court is expected to rule after the government responds later this week.
