Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger urged Elon Musk and other social media platform leaders to remove a video falsely claiming that a Haitian immigrant voted multiple times in Georgia using different IDs. Raffensperger’s office and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are investigating the video, which Raffensperger labeled as “targeted disinformation” likely intended to stir political discord, possibly originating from “Russian troll farms.”
Raffensperger’s statement reflects concerns over foreign interference in U.S. elections, an issue highlighted in a recent National Intelligence Council update. The council reported that countries like Russia, Iran, and China persist in spreading divisive narratives to undermine public trust in U.S. democracy, though they emphasized foreign actors would not be able to alter election outcomes undetected.
This call to action follows Raffensperger’s recent denial of voting fraud in Georgia as the state experiences record early voting turnout. The disinformation campaign echoes prior instances, including unverified claims spread by former President Trump and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance about Haitian immigrants, which led to threats against Springfield, Ohio, officials.
