A recent Gallup survey highlights a significant generational shift in LGBTQ identification, revealing that nearly 30 percent of Generation Z women, and 10.6 percent of Gen Z men, see themselves as part of the LGBTQ community. This contrasts sharply with Millennials, where 12.4 percent of women and 5.4 percent of men identify as LGBTQ. The survey, conducted among 12,145 adults in 2023, indicates that Gen Z leads in LGBTQ identification, with 22.3 percent identifying as such, compared to lower percentages in older generations.

The breakdown within Gen Z includes 15.3 percent identifying as bisexual, 3 percent as lesbian, 2.6 percent as gay, and 2.8 percent as transgender. Overall, 7.6 percent of Americans now identify as LGBTQ, a slight increase from the previous year. This trend suggests a future rise in LGBTQ identification nationally.

However, the survey also points to a slight decline in support for same-sex marriage and nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people, according to the Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas survey. Support for same-sex marriage dipped from 69 percent in 2022 to 67 percent in 2023, and support for nondiscrimination protections decreased from 80 percent to 76 percent.
