Ramon Morales Reyes, a Mexican national accused of threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump, may have been framed, according to a new CNN report. Law enforcement now believes the threat was not credible and that Reyes may have been set up by someone involved in a robbery and assault case in which he is the victim.

Despite these findings, the Department of Homeland Security said Reyes will remain in ICE custody due to his immigration status and criminal history, which includes nine illegal entries into the U.S. and past arrests for felony hit and run and disorderly conduct.

The handwritten threat letter sent to ICE promised to kill Trump at a rally, but police reportedly obtained a handwriting sample from Reyes that did not match. Milwaukee police are now investigating possible identity theft and witness intimidation.

Reyes has not been charged with making the threat.
