Andrew Hitt, the former chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party, spoke out in a “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper, revealing he was misled into signing documents falsely declaring Donald Trump the winner of the 2020 election. He explained that he was advised by the state GOP’s legal counsel to sign as a precautionary measure, pending the outcome of Trump’s legal challenges against Wisconsin’s election results.

Hitt expressed his discomfort with the Trump campaign’s efforts to invalidate votes and his disbelief in the widespread fraud claims. He highlighted that legal advice at the time deemed the documents meaningless unless a court found otherwise. However, he felt pressured to sign, fearing he would be blamed if Trump’s lawsuit succeeded and the electors were unprepared.

On December 14, the same day the Wisconsin Supreme Court rejected Trump’s lawsuit, Hitt and other GOP electors signed the document under the supervision of Kenneth Chesebro, whom federal special counsel Jack Smith identified as the scheme’s “architect.” Chesebro has since pleaded guilty to lesser charges in a Georgia case related to the fake elector scheme.

Despite resigning from his position in August 2021 and the absence of legal repercussions for fake electors in Wisconsin, Hitt maintains that they were deceived. He has cooperated with federal prosecutors, confident that evidence like text messages and emails shows they were misled. In December, the Wisconsin fake electors settled a civil suit, acknowledging their participation in the scheme and opposing efforts to undermine public faith in the 2020 presidential election’s results.
