LONDON, United Kingdom — Former Prince Andrew was arrested Thursday on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, marking a historic moment for Britain’s modern royal family.
Police confirmed that a man in his 60s was detained as part of an investigation linked to renewed scrutiny over Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Authorities searched properties in Berkshire and Norfolk, including his current residence on the Sandringham Estate and his former home near Windsor.
The arrest follows recent releases of U.S. Justice Department files related to Epstein. Earlier this month, police said they were reviewing claims that Andrew may have shared confidential documents with Epstein during his tenure as the U.K.’s trade envoy in 2010.
Andrew has consistently denied wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. He stepped back from royal duties in 2019 and later reached a settlement in a U.S. civil case brought by Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was trafficked to him as a minor. He denied the allegations.
British police did not name the suspect, consistent with local law, but confirmed the investigation remains ongoing. The development is widely viewed as unprecedented in modern royal history.
