Former Costa Rican President Óscar Arias Sánchez said Tuesday the United States revoked his visa, joining a growing list of foreign nationals whose visas have been suspended under the Trump administration for perceived “hostile attitudes.”

Arias, who won the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize for his Central America peace plan, has criticized President Trump in recent Facebook posts. He accused Trump of issuing “threats” to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a tense White House meeting and likened him to a “Roman emperor.”

Arias served as Costa Rica’s president from 1986 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2010. He said he received a brief email citing Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows visa revocation at the discretion of the State Department. No specific reason was given.

The State Department declined to comment on individual cases.

The administration has increasingly used visa revocation to target foreign critics. In February, Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Costa Rica and pledged support for President Rodrigo Chaves in “punishing” officials with opposing views.
