Five Democratic state lawmakers in Florida were denied entry Thursday to the state’s new $450 million migrant detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” citing “safety reasons.” The site, located in the Everglades, had just received its first detainees and was visited earlier in the week by President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
State Reps. Anna Eskamani, Angie Nixon, Michele Rayner, and Sens. Shevrin Jones and Carlos Guillermo Smith attempted the unannounced visit. “This has never happened,” said Jones, citing their legal authority to inspect state-run facilities.
The facility will house migrants arrested in Florida and those transferred from ICE. It’s part of Trump’s expanded immigration enforcement policy.
Florida Republicans mocked the Democrats’ attempt. AG James Uthmeier quipped they’d need an “air boat,” while the state GOP thanked the lawmakers for “finally taking an interest in the illegal immigration crisis.”
The GOP has promoted the facility with themed merchandise amid ongoing partisan battles over immigration enforcement.
