Federal investigators have uncovered thousands of online searches on the phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Crooks’ phone history included searches related to the 2021 Oxford High School shooting in Michigan, where a 15-year-old fatally shot four students. Crooks also researched depressive disorder, explosive materials, and improvised explosive devices, with over 14,000 links and images found on his phone.
One image was from Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the shooting occurred. Trump, shot in the ear, was escorted off stage by Secret Service agents. The attack resulted in the death of a former fire chief and injuries to two attendees. Crooks, armed with an AR-15-style rifle, was killed on-site. The incident has drawn scrutiny over law enforcement’s failure to secure the event.
Investigators believe Crooks acted alone without clear political motivations. Authorities confiscated over a dozen guns from the family’s home, with the family reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
