Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), herself a federal employee, declared that government workers “do not deserve” their jobs or paychecks during a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Tuesday.
“These are not real jobs producing federal revenue,” Greene said, arguing that federal employees consume taxpayer dollars rather than contributing to the economy. She also claimed that such jobs should be “fired at will.”
Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) criticized Greene’s comments, highlighting that 6,008 of Greene’s own constituents are federal employees. “Marjorie Taylor Greene believes 6,008 of her constituents are unworthy of a job or a paycheck,” Escobar posted on X, mocking Greene with Trump’s famous remark: “SAD!”
Greene, a strong proponent of government layoffs led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), made the comments in response to Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), who warned against privatizing the U.S. Postal Service, stating that eliminating it could disrupt trillions of dollars in e-commerce transactions.
