FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino publicly reaffirmed Sunday that Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in federal custody in 2019, countering years of conspiracy theories surrounding the high-profile case. “He killed himself,” Bongino said, adding he had reviewed the full investigative file.
Patel, speaking on Fox News, called Epstein’s death a clear-cut case of suicide, noting his experience with federal detention systems. Still, he acknowledged that skepticism persists: “People have a right to their opinion.”
The remarks mark a shift in tone from the Trump administration, which has promised more transparency around Epstein’s network. Trump issued an executive order in January calling for a declassification review of files tied to Epstein and other high-profile cases.
Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed to release flight logs and possible “client lists,” though initial document releases have yet to deliver major revelations. Epstein’s former partner Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence following her 2021 conviction for trafficking minors.
