The FBI uncovered over 150 homemade explosive devices, the largest collection in its history, during the December 17 arrest of Brad Spafford at his Virginia farm. Investigators found pipe bombs labeled “lethal” and others preloaded into a vest, with additional devices stored unsecured in a bedroom and garage. Spafford admitted to keeping a jar of the highly unstable explosive HMTD in his freezer, labeled “dangerous,” next to food.
The investigation began in early 2023 after a neighbor reported Spafford’s weapon stockpiling and noted he had lost three fingers from handling explosives. The neighbor also alleged Spafford expressed extreme political views, including using President Biden’s photos for target practice and supporting political assassinations.
Prosecutors argue Spafford poses “an extreme danger to the community,” while his defense claims he has no criminal record, history of mental illness, or threats against anyone.
