New data from the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) shows far-left extremist attacks surpassed far-right violence in the first half of 2025 — the first time in over 30 years. Researchers analyzed 750 domestic incidents since 1994, categorizing them by ideology.
Since 2016, far-left extremists have carried out 41 attacks compared to 152 by the far right. While far-left violence has killed 13 people in the past decade — fewer than the 112 deaths from far-right attacks and 82 from jihadists — CSIS documented at least five left-wing incidents this year versus one right-wing attack.
President Trump responded to the assassination of Charlie Kirk by designating antifa a “domestic terror organization” and pledging to investigate liberal donors for allegedly supporting violent protests. On Fox News, he claimed, “The radicals on the left are the problem.”
Lead author Daniel Byman cautioned Axios that the government should not use the findings “as an excuse for a crackdown on legitimate organizations.” He added that right-wing violence may have declined because extremists are “more comfortable with the Trump policies.”
