Brussels, Belgium: Leaders from eight European countries issued a rare joint rebuke of President Donald Trump on Sunday, condemning his threat to impose tariffs tied to military cooperation in Greenland and warning the move could seriously damage transatlantic relations.

The coordinated statement came from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom after Trump said he would impose tariffs on their exports in response to recent NATO-linked military deployments to Greenland. The countries emphasized that they stand in “full solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland and reaffirmed their commitment to NATO, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States would levy a 10% tariff on imports from the eight nations beginning Feb. 1, rising to 25% on June 1 unless the U.S. reaches what he described as a “complete and total purchase of Greenland.” The tariffs followed the launch of “Arctic Endurance,” a Danish-led military exercise involving allied forces aimed at strengthening Arctic security.

European leaders warned that using trade pressure against allies “undermines transatlantic relations and risks a dangerous downward spiral.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the tactic “completely wrong,” while Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson said Europe would not be “blackmailed.” Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen praised unified European support, stressing that Greenland is not for sale.

The dispute has sparked protests in Denmark and Greenland and drawn criticism from bipartisan U.S. lawmakers concerned about NATO cohesion and U.S. credibility.
