European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s plane was struck by GPS jamming during a flight to Bulgaria, in what EU officials suspect was a Russian operation.
The aircraft circled for an hour before the pilot landed manually using paper maps, according to the Financial Times. “We can confirm there was GPS jamming but the plane landed safe,” a Commission spokesperson said, adding that Bulgarian authorities suspect Moscow was behind the disruption.
“This incident underlines the urgency of the President’s current trip to frontline Member States, where she has seen first hand the everyday threats from Russia and its proxies,” the spokesperson noted, saying it reinforced Brussels’ commitment to boosting defense and supporting Ukraine.
Russia has been accused repeatedly of interfering with GPS signals in Eastern Europe, impacting flights, ships, and drones. The Kremlin has not commented on the latest allegations.
