On Wednesday, Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated that the current federal government shutdown exemplifies the redundancy of the Department of Education and proposes its dissolution, in accordance with President Donald Trump’s stated objective.

“The Democratic government shutdown has compelled agencies to assess what is genuinely essential,” McMahon claimed via X. “Millions of students continue to attend school, and educators are receiving their salaries. This situation substantiates the President’s assertion that the Department of Education is unnecessary.”

Although educational institutions are experiencing minimal immediate effects, an extended shutdown may significantly impact funding for schools located on military installations and tribal lands. Furthermore, the furlough of 95% of the department’s personnel has resulted in the suspension of various programs, including civil rights investigations.

Despite a reduction in staff that has nearly halved the agency’s workforce since the onset of the Trump administration, McMahon affirmed that educational funding remains stable and emphasized that oversight and policy matters should be managed directly by state governments.
