The U.S. Education Department announced Thursday that Columbia University is out of compliance with federal antidiscrimination laws, potentially jeopardizing its accreditation. The department cited Columbia’s “deliberate indifference” toward antisemitic harassment on campus following Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights informed the Middle States Commission on Higher Education that Columbia “no longer appears to meet the Commission’s accreditation standards.” The Commission determines eligibility for federal student aid, including loans and Pell Grants. Losing accreditation could render Columbia ineligible for federal financial aid programs.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon pointed to a Donald Trump–era executive order tying accreditation to civil rights compliance. Last month, a joint investigation by the Education and Health and Human Services departments concluded Columbia had failed to adequately protect Jewish students from harassment, thus denying them equal educational access.

Columbia University has not yet responded publicly to the findings.
