The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced Monday that it is investigating 60 universities for alleged failures to protect Jewish students from antisemitism, citing potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon warned that universities risk losing federal funding if they fail to comply with anti-discrimination laws. “University leaders must do better,” McMahon said, adding that taxpayer-funded schools must uphold federal protections for students.
The list of institutions under scrutiny includes Ivy League schools like Harvard University and smaller colleges like Middlebury College. The move follows the federal government cutting $400 million from Columbia University for its alleged inaction on antisemitism complaints.
The investigations come amid broader federal crackdowns, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s recent arrest of a Columbia University graduate student who led pro-Palestinian protests.
In response, Harvard announced a hiring freeze, and UCLA launched a new initiative to combat antisemitism on campus.
