The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it is cutting $600 million in grants for teacher training programs, citing concerns over “divisive ideologies” such as critical race theory, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and social justice.
The department highlighted examples from grant applications, including programs that encouraged teachers to “take personal and institutional responsibility for systemic inequities” and “interrupt racial marginalization and oppression of students” in instructional planning and discipline.
These cuts follow previous reductions in funding for the Institute of Education Sciences, which oversees education research and national student assessments. Critics of the programs argue that they push ideological agendas instead of improving educational outcomes.
“It’s hard to overstate how radical these teacher trainings are,” said Erika Sanzi of Parents Defending Education, pointing to declining student performance despite such initiatives. The department has defended the decision as part of broader efforts to refocus federal education funding.
