The Department of Justice proposed an order Wednesday night to temporarily limit the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) access to sensitive Treasury payment system data. The proposal, part of an ongoing lawsuit, would allow only two Treasury employees affiliated with DOGE to have “read-only” access.
The lawsuit, filed by three federal employee unions, claims Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent illegally granted DOGE access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which manages government payments and public debt. Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly must approve the DOJ’s proposal.
DOGE, created to cut government spending, faces multiple lawsuits over data access and disclosure requirements. Another suit, filed Wednesday, seeks to block DOGE from accessing Labor Department macroeconomic data. Meanwhile, Democratic congressional leaders are pressing the Trump administration for answers on DOGE’s security implications and legal authority.
