The Department of Justice is requesting a seven-year prison sentence for former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), citing what it described as “unparalleled” fraud and deceit. In a Friday court filing, prosecutors recommended an 87-month sentence, arguing Santos’s actions made a “mockery” of the U.S. election system.

“Santos planned and executed an assortment of fraudulent schemes and leveraged them and a fictitious life story to enrich himself and capture one of the highest offices in the government of the United States,” prosecutors wrote. They accused him of exploiting donors, including elderly and impaired individuals, and of failing to show genuine remorse.

Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 following a House Ethics Committee report detailing misuse of campaign funds. He later pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Though ordered to pay $205,000 in forfeiture and $375,000 in restitution, prosecutors say Santos has not made any payments.

His legal team recommended a lighter 24-month sentence, citing his cooperation in another federal case and lack of prior criminal history. Sentencing is set for April 25.
