U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Wednesday that the Justice Department will rescind a Biden-era directive prioritizing environmental law enforcement in low-income and disadvantaged communities.
The 2022 guidance, issued by former Attorney General Merrick Garland, focused on underserved areas and led to the creation of the Justice Department’s Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ). Following Trump’s inauguration, the OEJ was disbanded, and its website now returns an error message.
Bondi, confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday, stated the reversal ensures “even-handed administration of justice.”
The move aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to roll back Biden-era environmental policies. Trump has withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, halted EPA grants under the Inflation Reduction Act, and declared an “energy emergency.” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is now working to expedite federal energy development.
