The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, following allegations he lied to Congress about the state’s handling of COVID-19 nursing home deaths. The probe centers on claims Cuomo’s administration concealed thousands of senior deaths during the pandemic by underreporting fatalities in nursing homes.
House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) pushed for the investigation in April, citing a congressional report that accused Cuomo of orchestrating a “calculated cover-up.” The report concluded Cuomo should be prosecuted for providing false testimony to Congress.
Cuomo’s spokesperson Rich Azzopardi dismissed the investigation as “lawfare” and “election interference,” asserting the former governor testified truthfully to the best of his recollection.
The investigation comes as Cuomo campaigns for New York City mayor. He leads the race by 12%, per a recent Marist poll, ahead of independent incumbent Eric Adams. Cuomo’s campaign also faces scrutiny from regulators over $600,000 in alleged illegal coordination with a super PAC.
