The Education Department’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) is facing nearly $900 million in cuts after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) deemed much of its work unnecessary. The move resulted in 169 terminated contracts, raising concerns among educators and researchers about the impact on education accountability.
Education Department spokesperson Madison Biedermann stated that key programs like the NAEP assessment and College Scorecard would remain unaffected. However, student advocates warned that the cuts would hinder efforts to track educational inequities.
DOGE announced via social media that 89 contracts worth $881 million had been cut, including a $1.5 million deal for mail center operations. Another post noted the elimination of 29 DEI training grants totaling $101 million.
Two research associations urged the reinstatement of the contracts, arguing that much of IES’ work is congressionally mandated. Sen. Patty Murray criticized the cuts as “wasteful,” vowing to push back. Meanwhile, Trump has signaled plans to dismantle the Education Department, though congressional approval would be required for full closure.
