After growing pressure, the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday pledged $1 million to support immigrant families impacted by ICE raids across Southern California. The announcement followed criticism of the team’s silence and came a day after federal agents were seen near the stadium.
“In partnership with the City of Los Angeles,” the Dodgers said they will begin distributing direct aid and plan further actions “with local community and labor organizations.” Team president Stan Kasten acknowledged the need to act: “We have heard the calls for us to take a leading role.”
Activist groups and Latino leaders had called on the team to denounce what they described as a mass deportation program tied to Donald Trump’s immigration stance. Mayor Karen Bass praised the team’s response, calling it an example of community unity.
The team also addressed singer Nezza’s Spanish rendition of the national anthem at a recent game, saying there were “no hard feelings” after reports they had requested otherwise.
