Florida Governor Ron DeSantis distanced his state from the arrival of Andrew and Tristan Tate, stating Thursday that Florida had no involvement in their entry and was not notified by federal authorities.
“The reality is, Florida is not a place where you are welcome, with that type of conduct in the air,” DeSantis said, referencing the human trafficking and organized crime charges the Tate brothers face in Romania. “I don’t know how it came to this. We were not involved. We were not notified.”
The Tate brothers, who deny all charges, were allowed to leave Romania under undisclosed conditions despite remaining under “judicial control” and being required to return for trial later this year.
DeSantis indicated that Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is reviewing whether the state has any legal authority over the matter. He also pointed to federal jurisdiction, expressing confidence that officials such as Pam Bondi or Kristi Noem would investigate.
The Romanian prime minister has denied that the U.S. government pressured authorities to lift the Tates’ travel ban, though questions remain about how the decision was made.
