Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) criticized Congress Tuesday for failing to codify spending cuts recommended by President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.
“[Elon Musk] took massive incoming — including attacks on his companies as well as personal smears — to lead the effort on DOGE,” DeSantis posted on X, adding, “To see Republicans in Congress cast aside any meaningful spending reductions … is demoralizing and represents a betrayal of the voters who elected them.”
His comments come as lawmakers face a September 30 deadline to avoid a government shutdown and finalize the fiscal year 2026 budget. Trump has urged Congress to formally adopt DOGE’s recommendations via a rescission package.
Though conservative lawmakers in both chambers support enshrining the cuts, Senate Republicans have expressed reservations about adopting all DOGE measures wholesale. Legal challenges have also threatened the administration’s ability to enforce the cuts independently.
