Washington, D.C. – Eleven senators are urging President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to remove links from Moms.gov that direct users to crisis pregnancy centers.
The HHS website, launched on Mother’s Day, is promoted by the administration as a resource for new and expecting mothers. It includes information on pregnancy centers, federally qualified health centers, nutrition, and maternal health.
In a letter first reported by HuffPost and covered by The Guardian, senators including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Chuck Schumer, Ron Wyden, and Tammy Duckworth said the site directs pregnant people to facilities they described as unregulated and often non-medical anti-abortion centers.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says crisis pregnancy centers may present themselves as reproductive health clinics while seeking to discourage abortion or contraception. The senators also raised privacy concerns, arguing some centers are not subject to the same confidentiality rules as medical providers.
The White House defended Moms.gov as a one-stop resource for maternal and infant health. HHS says pregnancy centers provide support services such as pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting help, referrals, and material goods.
